Molybdenum
Synonyms: Molybdan (German)
(Originated from molybdos of lead meaning in Greek); one kind of metal elements; element symbol: Mo; atomic number: 42; atomic weight: 95.94; silver white metal; hard; added in steel for high-speed steel manufacturing; liquid lead.
Molybdan is not used much in industries. In high-temperature industries with requirements of mechanical properties, it’s often used (such as positive electrode for vacuum tube) as it’s cheaper than tungsten. Recently, the application in panel production line such as plasma power panel has been increasing.

What is Molybdenum Sheet and Molybdenum Powder used for?
Applications of Molybdenum Sheet
Molybdenum sheet, a high-purity refractory metal product, is valued for its exceptional thermal stability, electrical conductivity, and corrosion resistance. Key uses include:
1. Electronics & Semiconductor Industry
- Electric Vacuum Components: Used in high-power electron tubes, X-ray tubes, and vacuum interrupters due to its low thermal expansion and high melting point (~2,623°C).
- Semiconductor Devices: Fabricates heat sinks, electrodes, and substrates for power semiconductor devices (e.g., thyristors, diodes) to ensure efficient heat dissipation.
- Lighting Systems: Manufactures filaments, supports, and reflectors for halogen lamps, LED modules, and high-intensity discharge (HID) lamps.
2. High-Temperature Industrial Applications
- Furnace Components: Serves as heat shields, heating elements, and crucibles in vacuum or inert-atmosphere furnaces for sintering, annealing, and crystal growth processes.
- Molybdenum Boats: Shapes into evaporation boats for thin-film deposition in coating technologies (e.g., solar panels, optical coatings).
3. Aerospace & Defense
- Rocket Nozzles: Withstands extreme temperatures and erosion in aerospace propulsion systems.
- Radiation Shielding: Used in nuclear reactors and spacecraft for its ability to block high-energy particles.
Applications of Molybdenum Powder
Molybdenum powder, a fine granular form of molybdenum, is critical for advanced manufacturing and chemical processes. Key applications include:
1. Powder Metallurgy & Alloy Production
- Sintered Alloys: Compressed and sintered to produce high-strength, heat-resistant components like turbine blades, gears, and cutting tools.
- Metal Injection Molding (MIM): Forms complex-shaped parts for automotive, medical, and aerospace industries.
- Alloy Additive: Enhances hardness, wear resistance, and high-temperature performance in steel, superalloys, and nickel-based alloys.
2. Chemical & Catalytic Processes
- Catalysts: Acts as a catalyst or promoter in petroleum refining, hydrogenation reactions, and ammonia synthesis.
- Detonation Initiators: Used in pyrotechnics and industrial explosives for controlled ignition.
3. Advanced Manufacturing Technologies
- Sputtering Targets: Fabricates thin films for semiconductors, flat-panel displays, and solar cells.
- Diamond Tools: Bonds with diamond particles to create ultra-hard cutting and grinding tools for mining and machining.
